Who is Winning the Fiber Race

With the world going digital in almost every sphere of human life, it’s worth noting that the internet plays a grand role in this evolution. There is a growing need for companies to supply fast and reliable internet to different target markets to help with this worldwide growth, especially in America.

There has admittedly been slow growth in the country when it comes to internet supply due to the monopoly from telecom providers and bureaucracy, making it even harder for smaller companies to upgrade their services to fiber. That being said, things are looking up thanks to competition by grand players such as Google, AT&T and Cox fighting it out. This ultimately benefits the consumer in more ways than one.

Google Fiber Hits the Ground Running

Fiber markedly improves speed and the internet and communication experience as seen here. Companies and consumers both know this, and this is exemplified by the Google initiative which resulted in the installation of fiber in the Kansas City, Austin, Missouri. This initiative provided customers in the city a broadband speed of 1 gigabit which was surprisingly priced affordably. The price structure was as follows:

• A one gigabit line for $70 a month
• TV service and Internet for $120
• Free Internet service at a reputable 5 Mbps if one pays a one-time $300 connection fee.

This hasn’t been the only thing that Google has done; the mega company is now trying to expand to other cities and is even carrying out a topographical study to see how it will set up a similar service in areas such as Tuscaloosa, Atlanta, Phoenix , Nashville and its own Mountain View backyard.

AT&T Fights Back in North Carolina

North Carolina is perhaps the newest player in the fight to offer clients gigabit Internet speeds. Companies like AT&T have offered to give residents of this conservative state fast broadband that is even 100 times faster than what the city is currently providing to its residents for a much cheaper price. The telecoms company seems to have overtaken Google in this part of the country. It also has plans to offer the same service in Austin, Texas.

Cox Communications Not Left Behind

Cox communication is hot on the heels of the above named competitors, and it recently announced its intentions to launch 1Gbps fiber for home users. Pat Essser, the president and CEO of Cox said in an interview that they were working on their road map to bring gigabit speeds to consumers this year.

This move gives both AT&T and Google fiber a run for their money. That being said, Cox, AT&T and other providers don’t cite Google Fiber as a threat regardless of the internet giant’s natural flair for innovation and novelty. Last year, AT&T declared in Texas that it would supply a 1 Gbps service only hours after Google Fiber revealed its plans for Austin. Subsequently, Time Warner Cable announced that it would up speeds for its broadband customers from 50 to 300 Mbps at no extra cost to the consumer.

Research has shown that America has lagged behind in the growth of internet compared to other countries such as South Korea, Japan and Norway. However, with these new changes and an atmosphere of competition, things are slowly changing.

Consequences of The Fiber Race to Companies and Consumers

Companies that rely on data-based services are now faced with the possibility of offering their services in a more seamless and reliable way to customers. Fiber plans such as those being thought out by Google means that more customers will want to align themselves with these companies, opening up a whole new world for companies in terms of customer acquisition and profits.
